The Lunch Lady

I apologize for the blogging delay, but life has been nuts! Too much to do, and just not enough time.

This is a rough drawing of one of the kitchen workers at the Galaxy Ranger Academy kitchen. The kitchen staff can cook pretty much any dish, but don't make fun of their funny hats. They just might burn your toast.

Drawergeeks Caveman

Well, here he is. I would love to sit and really paint him up, but I need sleep. Little Suzie is really having fun on the swing. So much fun, that she doesn't hear her brother Timmy calling her in to dinner. It doesn't help that Cave Man breathes really loud.

I want a Cave Man.

Happy Friday everybody.

Imaginary Cave Man Evolved

After doing some thinking, I decided that the imaginary Cave Man should lose his shirt and tie, and trade it in for a fit and trim mud body. This was my sketch. I think he is a little more balanced here then in my initial concept. And way cooler. He is also holding little Suzie's balloon while she swings.

Then I grabbed my brush pen and threw some ink on it. Nothing too crazy, but I think it came out ok. Still loose and fun.

I am now painting this sucker up so he can join the party over at Drawergeeks. Thanks for all of your positive comments on this idea! I hope to post the painted version tomorrow.

Child's Imagination Cave Man

So, I got to thinking... What if you started talking with a child about "Cave Men." I wonder what they would envision?
The fact that he is wearing his suit and tie tells me that it is obviously a work day.

UGH! Rough Sketch Caveman! Ugh!

More non-rocket themed art for you on this Monday. This week's Drawergeeks is "Caveman." I as usual found a way to add a robot. This is my "throw an idea on paper" stage. Ruff. This is not actually the caption. Just thought I would mention that. Ahem. Anyway, I hope to paint this up this week. Lots of color. Lots of firelight.

Ok, I am off to prepare for another day in the salt mines.

The Seven Little Metal Miners Return

These little guys seem to have struck a chord with a few people. The original design was done as a play on the seven dwarves from Snow White over at Drawergeeks. Then, I posted them on the
  • Drawinboard.org
  • and got a really good response. I figured what the heck, and wrote a quick little children's book type story for them, and will tuck it away. Maybe draw it out for the blog one day.

Anyway, here they are taking a bow. Thanks for all the kind words everybody.

    And happy Friday.

    "Home Planet" Is Born

So after much thought, and even a little talking to myself, I have decided to give my comic strip series a name. It is still part of the main Rocket Dreams universe, but a smaller spin off from the larger story. If Rocket Dreams is the feature film, this comic strip is the television sitcom spin off.

From here on out, the strip will be drawn under the name "Home Planet." It takes place during the short amount of time that Dwight and ROBO-T are on Earth together. In the story ROBO-T (called simply "robot" by our friend Dwight) comes to Earth to inform Dwight that he has been accepted into the Galaxy Ranger Cadet Program. He now serves as Dwight's guide/protector and will rarely leave his side. These strips show the time these two spent together on Earth, when Dwight tries to explain a human's everyday life to a rookie robot.

Since these are just getting started, they are still evolving a bit. As soon as I feel like I have the final look that I will stick with, I will start the story from the beginning. As I go, I will try to draw a larger "Sunday Edition" comics every now and then.

The development work on the main Rocket Dreams story continues. Hey... who needs sleep? Have I mentioned I am having another baby in June? Whew...

    Thanks for listening... Jeremy out.

    The Seven Little Metal Miners

    Howdy.

This is my Drawergeeks for the week.
I would have liked to have worked the painting a bit more, but it is after midnight, and I am seeing all blurry.

    Happy Friday everybody.

    Captain Pencil

This is another old drawing I dug up, since I am in the middle of coloring my Drawergeeks submission and couldn't post it yet.

I am not sure what I was thinking on this guy.
It appears something really made him mad.

    My Seven Dwarves

This is my concept for Drawergeeks. The topic is "Snow White." Yeah, I know. It's a stretch. But these little guys are headed off to the mines one early morning... singing "Hi ho, hi ho."

    They deserve love too.

    Digging Up Old Stuff

    Happy Monday.

This is an old WIP that I had started for my web site. I ended up going in a new direction so it was never finished.
    Maybe one day...

I hope to post my Drawergeeks concept Tuesday... lets hope I get it done.

    Back to School

My oldest son returned to school this week after coming off of Christmas break. I did this little strip while talking to him about going back. I feel like these are pretty rough, and since I am still nailing a style, that is ok.

They are fun, and that is important. When I feel good about the style, I will start having these guys explore the world around them.

    Happy Friday everybody.

    The Poster

Here is the final teaser poster design. I could fuss with it for days, but I am slapping my hand, and moving on to the piles of work I still need to complete for the book.

The next step for me, I think... is to get into some environment design.
Oh and the remaining characters. Oh, and putting the story all together.
Hah hah .... ahh. I better get back to work.

    Realizing My Errors

The poster design I have been showing here, has been bugging me lately. It just struck me that... well, it really wasn't very good. There was a lot of character, but no real flow or sense of design. I was not happy with myself, and I think I came to the conclusion that I was just "throwing something together" without thinking it through.

Anyway, I sat down last night and re-worked my direction, and I am happy with how it is turning out. I will hopefully post that tomorrow, but in the meantime I am showing you the new poster title logo. I wanted to go more in the direction of a vintage hollywood action flick. I threw the robot in so it would be so much more exciting.

    Poster Inks

While still a bit sloppy, here is some of the ink mess I made.
I am adding and taking away on this thing, so hang in there.
