Happy Holidays

This being my last day in the office until the new year, I wanted to say Happy Holidays to everyone, and thank you again for checking out the blog. 2010 has been a great year for me, and I have very high expectations for 2011. There will be projects launching, both professionally and on the personal side. I also hope to draw some comics, showing the day-to-day here on the blog. My biggest goal is to keep moving forward.

Sure it's a bit light on plot points that make sense, but the sheer

brilliance of the visuals and the amazing texture laid down by the score

really made it a fun ride.

Another "Parable" Sneak

"Long ago, in a faraway land..."

That is how this story could begin! If I remember correctly it was about four or five years ago when I was approached to do a story for the "Parable" comic anthology. I hadn't really done any sequential work at that time, but I jumped at the chance. Looking back, I have no idea how I was able to get anything finished. I had a month to complete the work. I was using a version of Painter called "Painter Classic" which was basically a demo version of the software. There were many features disabled, including the ability to create layers! But I plowed forward, creating what I can at least say is an honest effort to tell a quick, fun story.

My story is titled "The Picnic" and it is about a young boy who goes to great lengths to share his peanut butter and jelly sandwich. And it has a cardboard box rocket in it. And an alien.

Because so much time has passed between when I started my story and current day, I have mixed feelings about how things came out. On one hand, I look back fondly at the experience. On the other hand, I start mentally re-drawing every panel as I read through it. The book itself has seen many changes over the last few years. The original direction was that of an "all ages" comic collection that could be enjoyed by just about any comic fan. The now very clear "christian" messaging will scare plenty of people off in my opinion... but perhaps that is a discussion for another time. :)

The bottom line is, I am happy to see the book published. There are a bunch of great stories inside, including offerings from my buds Bryan Ballinger, Paul Conrad, and Sarah Mensinga. The variety of art styles alone is a great reason to check it out. And I have to say that the ever so talented Mike Maihack has really done a fantastic job of not only adding a great story, but putting the entire book together.

One final note. I am considering not only re-drawing my story "The Picnic" over the next few months, complete with good artwork, but also drawing up it's sequel. My thought is that it would show the same tale from a different point of view.

The beginning...

A Tangled Holiday

I am settling back in this morning after taking last week off for the holiday, so I had even less time than usual this morning to sketch something out. This is truly a "color rough" that is nowhere near anything that I would normally show... but that is how we roll here on the blog. Throw it all out there.

I did want to mention that I saw "Tangled" this weekend. (as you might have been able to tell by my scribble above) I admit that I went in with my arms crossed, prepared to be let down once again by a "visually decent yet lacking in overall quality" movie. I was completely wrong. I loved it. I could feel myself smiling throughout almost the entire film. I was watching a great Disney feature film! The animation was spectacular, and I would recommend anyone looking to become a 3D animator go see this film just so you know where the bar has been set. The story, in my opinion, was well paced and a fun watch. Go see the movie.

I Am Thankful For You

It was my daughter's turn to provide a concept for the blog, and I think she out knocked it out of the park. Sophie is three, and loves drawing up all kinds of things. They are all usually related to Barbie in some way, but the variety of those relationships provides plenty of opportunity for chaos and mayhem.

I didn't ask her what this picture was, because I wanted to go at it with only what I saw in the piece. I will show this to her today and get her critical feedback. Wish me luck.

UPDATE: My daughter "approves" of my version, and wants to "take it home with her." However, she delicately explained that her character was a "kitty cat" and while mine was cute, it strayed a bit from the original idea. She is willing to give me another chance on a future piece.

I am back for a bit!

Sorry for the blog vacation, but I have really needed it! We have been extra slammed at work, I am working on several freelance projects, and I have about a million other little things to get done. I am drawing a Halloween poster for my son's pre-k class. I need to trim the hedges outside my house. Whew

Oh, I am also taking part in SIEGE 2010, going on this weekend here in Atlanta. Should be fun.

One good way to insure that you never finish, is to keep adding things. As you can see, this turned into an exercise of painting small objects. The composition was made up as I went along, and it shows. All in all, I had fun and perhaps I will revisit it some day. Do I ever really do that?
