Waiting For Trouble

I am working on a story for a comics anthology that will come out in 2009, and I have started to doodle around looking for a style. This is really rough, but I like the feel of things. As time passes I will reveal more details about the story and the design.

A Page From "The Picnic"

Yeah, I am alive, but moving slower now. I have been working on this Parable story for the past month, as well as doing the day job thing and being Daddy. While I can't really show you much on my story, I will post a random page or two over the next week. These are not fully cleaned up, and need a bit of work. Naked pages.

So, on the news front... I have been given a really great freelance book project to tackle. As usual, not many details for you, but this will be a great opportunity to design characters and illustrate a full book. The bad news is that I can't really post anything from it, so I will have to start doing a "blog drawing of the day" or something so I can stay in the blogging loop.

That is all

Poking My Head Above The Water

Well... I had to throw something up here. This is the longest I have gone without posting SOMETHING in a while.

A while back, my team developed a lot of the art for the M&M's World store in Times Square. All sorts of fun. This was a "rough" turnaround of their Green character as the Statue of Liberty. There are issues, but when you do as much art as fast as we did... there are bound to be issues.

As a kind of update... I am slammed, thus the lack of bloggy goodness. I am working like a fool with my hair on fire on my Parable comic. I am doing some animation development work as a freelance gig. And if all works out, I will be taking on another freelance project that could be big. I still have hopes of putting together a pitch book for the San Diego Con. Oh, and my day job. Drawing round chocolates.

I will post some of my original stuff soon.

Thanks for checking in people!

A Blog Slacker

I know, I know. I have been neglecting my blog. I admit it. I can however say that I have not been slacking off. Every night after dinner I head into my office at home and sit down at the drawing table. I am still doing pencils on my comic, and so far so good. I have about 12 pages pencilled so far, with almost that many to go. I am up till around 1:00am, doodling away... only to get up around 6:30am with the baby. Not complaining... just explaining the growing dark circles under my eyes.

So, that is my excuse. I really can't post anything from the comic... but maybe little snips that make no sense like above. I will try to draw something cool that I can show soon. Promise.

Parable Character?

Morning.... whew, long hours really chip away at your brain. I am pretty crispy since I stay up late drawing, and then wake up early with our 11 month old. Somehow, he seems just fine. Full of energy. Soon I fear I will give in to the Dark Lord Red Bull, and serve in the minion army of Guarana... but so far it's just Diet Dr. Pepper I carry with me onto the battlefield.

Anyway, enough sleepless babble. This is an early idea for my comic story hero. A younger chap, around 6 or maybe 7 years old. A happy little guy. He gets sleep.

Off to the salt mines!

The Hornet's Demise

Today, I have a guest artist contributing to the blog. My son, Jordan. Jordan is 12 and loves comics. I asked him to fill in since I am still doing the comic thing. I will have something tomorrow, but until then, enjoy!

Snoozing Jailer

Another one from the olden days.

I will post a few tidbits from my comic in the next day or so. I can't show much, so maybe the character's foot or something.

I Am No Architect

Wow... after fighting with Blogger today, I am managing to post some more old stuff! This is from the same project. All of the elements, including the architecture were pretty fun and whimsical. That would explain the lack of right angles.

I have had family in town, which means I have already fallen behind on my comic! The story is thumbnailed out and I hope to start sketching out full pages tomorrow.

Happy Friday!

Vanhoozer In Parable

Hey everybody! I have a cool announcement to share, and it involves comics! I have been invited to participate in a comic book project titled "Parable." I didn't know too much about the project, but after talking with the guy running the show (Mike Maihack) I felt that this would be a pretty awesome opportunity. I have been wanting to do a comic for a while now, and Mike is letting me run with it. One of the deciding factors for me joining up, was being in a book with so many really talented artists.

So, I may be posting less over the next few months since I have till May 1rst to dream up, sketch out, clean up, ink and color my story. I will show bits and pieces of the art here, but the final work will be kep hush hush for the book. I am very pumped to do some cool sequential stuff, and am going to attempt to go all out on this one.

Man... a month and a half. Who needs sleep!?

Encounter In Orbit

Here is my remaining Drawergeeks submission for the week. I went a bit nuts, and did.... oh, five pieces. I know. A bit of overkill. But I do love robots.

Anyway, this is actually a scene from Rocket Dreams. Dwight finds himself face to face with the giant experimental robot "Proto 1."

I am really tired, and headed to bed. I hope everyone has a great Friday.

The Lava Men From Hell Planet!

I am not really sure where these came from. I was sitting at my computer late last night, and just started scratching out an idea. I gave myself one color, and black. These skull robots just came out... more than likely inspired by the Ashley Wood comic, "Robots vs Zombies" that a co-worker showed me this week. I picture these guys traveling the universe, setting up volcanos. Huge robots zipping around lighting mountains on fire. Hmmm.

Then I doodles this scene. Another free flowing experiment. I was just wondering if you could do a mini comic like this. Barren planet. Giant alien robots. Asteroids. You know... fun times.

A Little Help Around The Lab

This week has been rough. Extreme work load. Crazy stress. My 10 month old has become mobile. I am finishing up my Drawergeeks! submission and I should be able to post that on Friday.

More soon!

Woosh!

A quiet night. The stars are quietly twinkling above you. Then WOOOSH!!! A small rocket zooms over your head, barely clearing the trees! I am starting to dream up a few color layouts, just to explore the mood of the story. This is right after the rocket launches, and goes screaming over rooftops before shooting up towards space.

I am exhausted, and it isn't even Tuesday yet. This day job is realling draining me. Must keep plowing forward... one day I will buy my freedom! Hah.

Space Squids Are Awesome

I had always wanted to include some sort of super space squid in the Rocket Dreams story, and my good friend Paul Conrad had doodled a squiddy earlier in the week so I felt inspired. This is rough, and needs some help... but it satisfied my need for a space squid for now.

Sgt. Flag

This is Sergeant Flag, the shooting instructor at the Galaxy Cadet Academy. Here he is out of uniform, which is common since he has a hard time fitting into it.

Tomorrow is Valentines Day, so keep your head down.

Sneakin Around

Only a scribble today. Been busy. Real busy.
Hope to have some Rocket Dreams stuff to post in the next day or so.

It's Monday again.

Captain Marvel and the Pesky Robot

Happy Friday all. Here is the Captain Marvel piece, in it's final state. As usual I put this off till the last minute so I don't have time to go back and tweak. In the end, he is smacking a giant robot, which was my desired effect.

The showdown went something like this:

Captain Marvel: Hey robot, outta my way.

Giant Robot: Uh, no.

Captain Marvel: Dude, you're askin for it.

Giant Robot: Like I am so much bigger than you.

Captain Marvel: CRACK!!

I don't know details, but that is pretty much how it went down.
